The binder clip, better known as a banker clip or folding clip , is a simple device for binding paper together. It leaves the paper intact and can be removed quickly and easily, unlike staples. The term "foldback clip" is used in the UK to illustrate this invention (not to be confused with bulldog clips, older devices with similar functions, which are stronger and stiffer than folded handles). Sometimes it is also called a "handbag clip" because when not in use, the clip can be folded to look like a handbag.

Characteristics and methods of use

The fastener clip is a strip of spring steel bent into an equilateral triangle with a loop at the top. The tension along the base of the triangle forces both sides closed, and the loop prevents a sharp steel edge cutting into the paper. The loop also serves to hold two rigid wires, which are used as a handle and allow the clips to open. Two slits cut in each circle are formed so that the wire handle can be folded down after the clip is attached, and the wire spring force holds it on the surface of the paper. It holds a relatively flat clip, to make it easier to stack the paper. One handle can also be folded while the other remains to allow the paper stack to be hung. The handle can also be completely removed by pressing it to the side and pulling it out, allowing for a more permanent binding. Compared to paper clips, binding clips are able to bind paper sheets safer, and also resistant to rust.

There are several binder clip sizes, ranging from 5 millimeters (0.2 inch) to 50 mm (1.97 inches) span of . The sheet steel parts are usually coated with black oxide, but various painted decorative color schemes are also available. The sheet steel section is sometimes made of stainless steel, a more typical spring steel can also be finished with nickel, silver or gold. The handle is usually nickel plated.

Usage

These binder clips are commonly used in modern offices. This paper can hold multiple sheets of paper, and is usually used as a paper clip for a large number of papers. Various uses of practical (and sometimes odd) alternatives have been proposed. This includes holding the blankets together, creating a "beer pyramid" in the refrigerator with a wire rack, serving as a pointer, a cheap alternative to a money clip or preventing the computer cable slipping behind the desk. Smaller clips have been commonly used as a fitting and sizing "quick fix" solution in the fashion industry.

In 1966, the test pilot Joseph F. Cotton used glossy metal parts such as clips for short circuits of electrical circuit boards to force the XB-70 bomber's landing gear on a flight.

History

The binding clip was invented in 1910 by Washington, DC resident Louis E. Baltzley, who was eventually awarded US Pat. No. 1313,627 for his invention in 1915. At that time, the method of binding paper sheets together was to perforate the holes in it and sewing it together, making it boring to throw out a piece of paper.

Louis Baltzley invented a binding clip to help his father, Edwin Baltzley, a writer and inventor, hold the manuscript easily. While the original design has been changed five times, the basic mechanism remains the same.

Baltzley originally produced his invention through L.E.B. Manufacturing company. The earliest clip clip is labeled "L.E.B." on one side of the steel sheet. The right of manufacturing is then licensed to other companies.
