Cosmic Coasters are board games designed by Andrew Looney and published by Looney Labs. In 2002, the Cosmic Coasters won the Origins Award for the Best Abstract Board Game 2001 .

The game is played in a custom beach bar with a Galilean moon image on one side and a summary of the rules on the other. The coaster is designed to be used as an actual coaster as well as a board, and the game does not use anything that is unlikely to be in the bar (like dice).

Gameplay

Each coaster represents a space colony with four "factories", four "control points" and one "teleporter". Each player takes seven special counters - for example, coins of the same denomination - and puts them on their coasters.

Players take turns to move. Every turn, they can Teleport, Build, or Move.

Teleport
As long as a player is the only player who controls (has a counter on) two or more of the control points on a coaster, they can either move the counter from the teleporter coaster to another coaster, or out of the game. If they move to another counter, the counter is destroyed.
Build
As long as the player controls two control points adjacent to an empty factory, and they have a spare counter, they can place one of their spare counters at the factory.
Move
The player can move one of the counters to an adjacent space. If space is occupied, the attacker and defender play one round "Stone, Paper, Scissors" to determine the result:
  • Attacker wins - The defender is removed and the attacker moves into space.
  • Tie - The defender is removed but the attacker does not move into space.
  • Defender wins - Defender is not removed and attacker does not move into space. The turn is useless.

Each player has special powers, depending on their coaster. The first player to teleport the counter back to their own victory coaster.
