A decal ( , , , ) or transfer are plastics, fabrics, paper or ceramic substrate which have been printed on it patterns or images that can be moved to other surfaces on contact, usually with the aid of heat or water.
This word stands for decalcomania , which is the English version of the French word dÃÆ' à © calcomanie .
The technique was invented by Simon FranÃÆ'çois Ravenet, a French sculptor who later moved to England and refined the process he called "dÃÆ' à © calquer" (which means copying with search); it became widespread during the decal craze from the late 19th century.

Properties
Stickers are made from the following layers from top to bottom:
- The paper or film stock makes the top layer of the label. Printing is done on the top side of the facestock.
- The adhesive layer is applied to the bottom of the face stock.
- A silicone or release coating layer is applied to the upper side of the backing material.
- Paper or film liner provides the bottom layer of the label.
- RFID circuits (chips and antennas) can be incorporated in paper stock or face film.
Different variations of decals include: water-slide or water-dip ; and vinyl peel-and-stick . Water slides (or water dyes) are printed on screen on a water-soluble adhesive layer on waterproof paper, which must be immersed in water prior to application.
After contact with water, the glue is loosened and the sticker can be removed from the base; too long exposed, however, dissolves the glue completely causing stickers to fail to stick. The peel-and-stick sticker is not really a sticker as described above, but a vinyl sticker with adhesive that can be transferred by peeling the base. The call sign industry is peel-and-stick vinyl stickers vinyl-cut-decals .

Production process
Mass production of vinyl decals begins with large vinyl sheet rolls. Vinyl is fed through a large format plotter or printer/cutter that prints the desired image and cuts the desired shape. Designs are usually created using special computer software and sent to the machine electronically. Once the pattern is cut, the vinyl excess on the sheet is removed in a process called weeding . Finally, the paper pre-mask can be applied to the top of the vinyl design that allows easy application for many letters and shapes.
Apps
Decals are generally used on hot rods and plastic models. They are also used on guitars as a way of personalizing them.
Government agencies (and some Public Private Partnerships) use decals on vehicles for identification. These decals are referred to as fleet signs and are required by law on all fire engines and law enforcement in the US. Most fleet signs are made of reflective vinyl with adhesive backing applied by peel and stick.
