A driving test (also known as driving test , driver test , or road test ) is a procedure designed to test the ability of a person to drive a motor vehicle. It exists in various forms around the world, and it is often a requirement to get a driver's license. Driving tests generally consist of one or two sections: a practice test, called road test , is used to assess a person's driving ability under normal operating conditions, and/or written or oral test (theoretical exams) to confirm one's knowledge of driving and the relevant rules and laws.
The first mandatory national driving test in the world was introduced in France in 1899.
To make a fair test, a written driving test is usually a standard test, which means that everyone takes the same test under the same conditions. In many places, tests can be performed by a computer, and usually consist of questions related to traffic signs and traffic laws of individual countries, but may also include questions related to road safety best practices or technical questions related to operation and maintenance vehicle. In many countries, passing a written driving test is required to be allowed to take practice tests.
Depending on the country and on the driver's license category, practical tests include driving on public roads, open roads and different maneuvering tests, which are usually performed in controlled environments such as:
- driving back and forth through a series of traffic cones
- flips in a corner or into a parking lot, with or without trailer or semi-trailer
- emergency stop or evasive maneuver
- coupling and de-coupling from a trailer to a truck, which includes building electrical connections and compressed air and checking them
- keep the motorbike stable at low speed
In most EU Member States, road tests may be conducted on manual or automated vehicles, however, when using an automated vehicle, the driver's license will be limited to the vehicle.
Depending on the state, other tests may be required, such as vision tests or reaction tests. It may be part of a theory test or a practical test or may be a separate test, in which case they are usually a prerequisite for admission to a practical test. The United Kingdom and some other countries use the Danger Perception Test as part of the theoretical test, in which the candidates are shown some short video clips of the driving scenario and must respond to any perils that arise.
In the United States, most of the offices of the Motor Vehicle Service do not provide a vehicle for road test and the person taking the test must provide their own vehicle. This is useful because the vehicle they use for the test is usually the same vehicle they use to practice driving. Before they can use the vehicle for tests, they must show proof of liability insurance to the DMV for a particular vehicle to avoid the obligation of a collision that may occur during the test.
