Free writing is a pre-writing technique in which a person writes continuously for a period of time regardless of spelling, grammar, or topic. This produces a raw material that is often unusable, but helps the writer to overcome apathetic blocks and self-criticism. It is mainly used by prose writers and writing teachers. Some authors use techniques to gather initial thoughts and ideas about a topic, often as a prelude to formal writing. Free writing is not the same as automatic writing.

Unlike brainstorming where ideas are only listed, in freewriting one writes a sentence to form a paragraph about whatever comes to mind.

History

Dorothea Brande is an early advocate of freewriting. In his book Being a Writer (1934), he advises readers to sit down and write for 30 minutes each morning, as fast as they can.

Peter Elbow advanced in the writing of his book Writing Without Teachers (1975), and was popularized by Julia Cameron through his book The Artist's Way (1992).

Technique

This technique involves continuous writing, usually for a predetermined time period (often five to fifteen minutes). The author writes regardless of spelling, grammar, etc., and does not make corrections. If the authors reach the point where they can not think of anything to write, they write that they can not think of anything until they find another line of thought. Authors are free to miss the topic, letting thought lead where they can. Sometimes, an author can also perform focused freewrites, letting the selected topics draw up their thoughts. Extending from this topic, the mind may stray to make connections and create a more abstract view of the topic. This technique helps the writer explore a particular subject before putting the idea into a more basic context.

Freewriting is often done daily as part of the author's daily routine. Also, students in many writing courses are assigned to perform such daily writing exercises.

The writing should not be done with pen and paper. The technique known as Freeblogging combines blogging with free writing with changing rules so the author does not stop typing for long periods of time. The final result may or may not be shared publicly.

Definitions

Freelance is based on the assumption that, while everyone has something to say and the ability to say it, mental springs may be hindered by apathy, self-criticism, hatred, anxiety about deadlines, fear of failure or criticism, or other forms. resistance. The accepted free-spelling rules allow a writer to build enough momentum to blow past blocks into an unhindered flow, a concept outlined by writing masters such as Louise Dunlap, Peter Elbow, and Natalie Goldberg.

Free writing is about loosening and flexing the thinking process, not about products or performances for students or authors.

Use in education

Often free writing workshops focus on self-expression, and sometimes even used in teaching elementary school children. There is no general consensus on the acceptance of this technique.

Rules

Here are important rules that are often formulated for beginners or students, often a paraphrase of "Rules for Writing Free" Natalie Goldberg, often referred to as the first four written rules of Natalie Goldberg:

  • Give yourself a deadline. Write for one or ten or twenty minutes, and then stop.
  • Move your hands until the time is up. Do not stop to stare into space or read what you have written. Write quickly but not in a hurry.
  • Do not care about grammar, spelling, punctuation, neatness, or style. No one else needs to read what you produce here. The precision and quality of what you write is not important; no writing action.
  • If you are out of the topic or run out of ideas, keep writing. If necessary, write things that are absurd or whatever comes into your head, or write them down: anything to keep your hands moving.
  • If you feel bored or uncomfortable when writing, ask yourself what is bothering you and write about it.
  • When the time is up, look back at what you have written, and mark the parts that contain ideas or phrases that may be worth saving or elaborated in the next free writing session.

The Goldberg rule seems to be based on that developed by Jack Kerouac, whom he quoted several times. Kerouac develops 30 "rules" in his beliefs & amp; Techniques for Modern Prose. While Kerouac's "rules" are elliptical and even absurd for novice writers, they are more comprehensive than Goldberg for those who have practiced writing prose for some time. Kerouac complements this with the Essentials of Spontaneous Prose, and together they form the basis of the method of prose writing, a form of narrative awareness flow. Kerouac himself quotes the "transcription writing" of William Butler Yeats as a precursor of his own practice.

The Goldberg Rule, impregnated with the study and practice of Zen Buddhism, makes the process of free writing more accessible for beginners and perhaps less extreme than Kerouac, though they are still colored with an element of mysticism.
