Preparation
Design
The invitation follows the same design since the invitation of President Harry S. Truman's invitation on January 20, 1949. The invitation has a golden opening seal at the top of the page and a black script using Shelley Alegro and Typography kuenstler. The invitation reads, "The Inauguration Committee of the President asks the honor of your presence to attend and participate in the inauguration of Barack H. Obama as President of the United States and Joseph R. Biden Jr. as Vice President of the United States of America on Tuesday, January twenty two thousand nine in Washington city. "
Inks for invitations were supplied by the Chicago BuzzInk company, and the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Events chose Precise Continental of Brooklyn, New York to print out invitations. Continental is appropriately selected because it is a union company, using recycled paper, and Forest Stewardship Council certification. The printing technique for the invitation is engraving. The design is cut to the surface of the copper plate, which is then etched and inserted into the printing press with a piece of paper. The result is a slight impression on the front of the page and a slight impression at the bottom. The first plate should be removed because it is engraved without the President's centerpiece. The gold seal was engraved in three prints. The first print lay a rough-textured base of gold. The second run adds subtlety and sheen, and the final print run adds fine detail to the seal. A million invitations are printed for 20 hours every day between December 11, 2008 and January 2, 2009, with employees working in two shifts and resting only on Christmas and New Year's Eve. The invitation was printed one by one on 11ÃÆ'â ⬠"17 sheets of paper, which were then cut in half to 8Ã,ýÃÆ'â â¬" 11 sheets.
Paper
The paper used to print invitations originally came from Michigan. Waste paper collected from a local company in Grand Rapids was collected by Louis Padnos Iron & amp; Metal. It was sent to Wisconsin, where it turned into mush. The Whiting Paper Mill, owned by Neenah Paper, another FSC certified company, turns pulp into CLASSIC CREST Recycled 100 Natural White Papers manufactured by Neenah Paper, which contains FSC certified fibers and is made with 100 percent renewable. green energy in a carbon-free, neutral, chlorine-free process. This paper was sent to Precise by Central National-Gottesman, another FSC certified company.
Mailing
