Joseph C. Gayetty (b) 1827? Massachusetts - d.__) is an American inventor who is credited with the invention of commercial toilet paper. This is the first and only one left of some commercial toilet paper from 1857 to 1890 remaining in general use until the discovery of flimsy toilet paper in 1935 by the Northern Tissue Company.

Biography ==

The US Census Record from 1860 shows Gayetty living in New York City with her family; his birthplace in a census record registered as Pennsylvania.

He first marketed toilet paper on December 8, 1857. Each sheet of Manila pure paper flax was given a watermark "J C Gayetty N Y". The original product contains aloe vera as a lubricant and is marketed as an anti-hemorrhoids medical product.

Gayetty was attacked as a shaman by at least one medical community. However, her ad in the same year called her product "The Largest Need of the Century" and warned against the dangers of using toxic inked paper on sensitive body parts. A different advertisement, also printed in 1859, says his business is located at 41 Ann Street, and he sells 1,000 sheets for a dollar.

Gayetty's name and product were involved in a lawsuit filed in 1891, when B.T. Hoogland's Sons, a toilet paper seller, filed a lawsuit against the Gayetty Paper Company, in particular Harry K. Gayetty, for trademark infringement. B.T. Hoogland and Son's claim is that they are entitled to use Gayetty's name because of unpaid debts. A paper dated December 5, 1866, allegedly given to creditors in lieu of $ 25 debt and then sold to B.T. Hoogland (senior) for a dollar. However, on January 1, 1866, JC Gayetty signed a ten-year contract for exclusive rights to sell and sell on his behalf with Demas Barnes and Company, which revoked the copyright on the product on October 27, 1891. the suit was dismissed in 1894, but other settings are filed. B.T. The Hoogland children further sued to stop Harry K. Gayetty and Diamond Mills Paper Company using Gayetty's name, and in this case they succeeded. Harry Gayetty appealed, but lost in Court of Appeal. Finally in July 1900, the New York Supreme Court permanently ordered the Diamond Mills Paper Company and Harry K. Gayetty to use the name on a similar paper product label.

In 1900, an ad showed that B.T. Hoogland's Sons of New York distributed a water-marked "Papel Medicado De Gayetty" and rewarded the discovery of this paper in 1857 by Joseph C. Gayetty, Inventor. Almost the same advertisement was run in English in 1907. This product continued to be marketed until the 1920s.
