Kehidupan awal

Margaret Knight was born on February 14, 1838, in York, Maine to James Knight and Hannah Teal. After his father died when he was young, the Knight family moved to Manchester, New Hampshire. He received elementary education, but left school with his brothers to work in a cotton factory. At age 12, Knight witnessed an accident at a factory where a worker was stabbed by a steel-tipped steel plane that shot out of a mechanical loom. Within weeks he created a security tool for looms that was later adopted by other Manchester factories. The device was never patented and the exact nature is unknown, although it may be a tool to stop the loom when a plane thread breaks up or guards physically block the shuttle. Health problems prevent Knight from continuing to work in the cotton factory and in his teens and early 20s he does some work, including home improvements, photography, and carvings.

Careers

Knight moved to Springfield, Massachusetts in 1867 and was hired by Columbia Paper Bag Company. In 1868, Knight created a machine that folded and stuck paper to form a flat, flat-brown paper bag that was familiar to today's buyers. Knight builds a wooden model of the device, but requires an iron model that works to apply for a patent. Charles Annan, who was in the machine shop where Knight's iron model was built, stole his design and patented the device. Knight filed a successful patent interference lawsuit and was awarded a patent in 1871. With a Massachusetts business partner, Knight founded Eastern Paper Bag Co. and receive royalties.

Many other inventions include removing lid pliers, numbering machines, window frames and sashes, patented in 1894, and several devices related to rotary machines, patented between 1902 and 1915.

A plaque that recognizes him as "the first woman to obtain a US patent" and holds 87 US patents hanging at Curry Cottage at 287 Hollis St in Framingham. However, Knight is not really the first: Mary Kies or Hannah Slater has that honor.
