Super Paper Mario (Japanese: ??????????? , Hepburn: S? p? P? p Mario ) is an action-actioning, platforming, action 2007 video game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo for home video game consoles Wii. This is the third game in the series Paper Mario . The game follows 2004 Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and is followed by Paper Mario: Sticker Star in 2012.

This game departs from the games featured in previous Mario Paper titles, especially those featuring scrolling side-scrolling games with role-playing elements. Players control Mario and then Princess Peach, Bowser and Luigi, each of which has different abilities. Most of the games revolve around Mario's ability to "flip" between dimensions, allowing him to switch between 3D and 2D perspectives at every level and maneuver around normally unacceptable obstacles. The plot follows a four-character search to collect eight Pure Hearts to prevent Count Bleck, the main antagonist, from destroying the universe.

The game was well received, aggregating critical score of 85.16% and 85% on GameRankings and Metacritic with many critics praising the plot and funny writing of the game. As of March 2008, it has sold 2.28 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling games on the Wii. In 2011, the game was re-released as part of the Nintendo Selects program in North America, and in Europe the following year in 2012. The game was released on the Wii U Virtual Console North America on June 16, 2016.

Gameplay

Super Paper Mario is described by GameSpot as a mix of RPG gameplay with platforming game. Players move through a series of levels, explore different landscapes, fight enemies, and solve puzzles. The game is divided into 30 levels in eight chapters, each of which takes place in unique locations, or "dimensions".

Premises and settings

The main purpose is to collect eight Pure Hearts, one in each chapter, which is used to gain access to the next. Each area joins the central hub, a town called Flipside.

Majority of gameplay in 2D. At the beginning of the game, Mario is given the ability to "flip" to 3D. Thus, the perspective shifts and the 2D level spins to reveal the hidden z axis, placing Mario in a 3D environment. Flipping allows the player to maneuver around the obstacles that are passed in 2D perspective, or to find different items, enemies, or landscapes that are only visible along the z axis. Staying in a 3D perspective takes too long Mario's health.

The game uses a scoring system in which points are gathered through enemies that defeat and use items. It also acts like a player's experience points system; points allow players to level up and get stronger attacks and higher resistance to damage from enemies or dangers. If the player's heart point (HP) reaches 0, they must reload from the save point.

Players gain control of Princess Peach, Bowser, and Luigi as the game progresses and can switch between them at almost any point in the game. Princess Peach can float long distances and block attacks with his umbrella, Bowser can breathe fire, Luigi can do a super jump, and Mario is the only one who can switch between dimensions.

Control

This game is controlled by holding Wii Remote sideways, similar to the Nintendo Entertainment System control scheme, although little motion sensing is implemented. During game play, Pixl Tippi allows players to use Wii remote pointers such as spotlights to highlight and read item descriptions and enemies, or view hidden objects. Button 1 on the Wii Remote allows players to use the capability of a creature like a digital fairy called Pixls, and button 2 allows players to use Pixl capabilities (characters like a digital fairy) and jump, respectively. Pixls gives players the ability to throw or break obstacles, become small, or defend against the enemy. Wii Remote motion controls are used primarily to activate items by tilting or shaking the remote. Shaking the remote after attacking the enemy causes the player to pull "Stylish move", earn extra points, and deal more damage.

Plot

Luigi, Bowser, and Princess Peach were kidnapped by Count Bleck, the game's main villain, who controls a power book called "Dark Prognostic". He arranges marriages between Peach and Bowser and uses the hypnotic powers of his allies Nastasia to force them to marry. As prophesied in Dark Prognosticus, their marriage calls Chaos Heart, which Count Bleck uses to open a black hole known as "The Void" which will eventually grow big enough to destroy the universe. Mario meets Tippi, a butterfly like Pixl, who transports it to the interdimensional town of Flipside. There, Mario meets Merlon, who tells him that he matches the description of Hero described in "Light Prognosticus," another prophetic scripture. According to Prognosticus Cahaya, Heroes will travel to various dimensions to collect eight Pure Hearts, which can dispel Heart Chaos and reverse the destruction. This thick book also mentions that the Hero will ally with three other Heroes. Mario and Tippi set out to collect Pure Hearts and stop Count Bleck's plans. To stop Mario, Count Bleck regularly sends his accomplices: O'Chunks, a Scottish soldier; Mimi, an immature shapeshifter; and Dimentio, a traveling-traveling mystery explorer.

After Peach and Bowser escape, they team up with Mario and Tippi to find Pure Hearts. Nastasia brainwashing Luigi into an evil alter ego named Mr. L, who also tried to stop the group. Luigi finally regains his memory and joins the group.

A series of flashbacks tells the story of a romantic relationship between two individuals, Blumiere and Timpani, who came from a rival clan. The insulting Blumiere's father forcibly ended their relationship and drove Timpani to roam between dimensions and eventually die. It gradually reveals that Tippi is Timpani and Count Bleck is Blumiere, who, unaware that Merlon turns Timpani into Pixl, is driven insane by his loss. Blumiere seeks to bring existence to destroy and turn to Dark Prognosticus. Throughout the game, Blumiere and Timpani begin to realize another genuine identity, and Blumiere begins to regret her actions, but goes on with his plan, knowing that he's gone too far to stop.

After collecting all Pure Hearts, the group entered Castle Bleck and defeated O'Chunks and Mimi, but lost contact with Bowser and Peach in the process. Mario, Luigi and Timpani face Dimentio, who intend to betray Blumiere. Dimentio also revealed that he anonymously assisted the group during their trip, which included helping Peach and Bowser escape. When Mario refuses to ally with Dimentio, Luigi fights and defeats Dimentio, who seems to commit suicide, bringing Luigi with him. Mario and Timpani continue their journey through Castle Bleck.

They face Blumiere but can not attack because Chaos Heart gives him invincibility. Peach, Bowser and Luigi reappear, and use Pure Hearts to destroy Blumiere's defenses and defeat him, but fail to stop the destruction of The Void. Dimentio appears and takes control of Chaos Heart, revealing that he has studied the Dark Prognostic extensively and hopes to use Chaos Heart and Void to create a new universe in his own image. Dimentio takes over Luigi again, as Dark Prognosticus reveals him as the ideal Chaos Heart host, and combines Chaos Heart, Luigi, and himself into a single entity called Super Dimentio, which destroys Pure Hearts and begins to create his new universe. However, the renewed love of Blumiere and Timpani and the loyalty of the remnants of Blumiere's servant restore the Pure Heart. Mario defeated Super Dimentio and Dimentio died, but left part of his power to control Chaos Heart and complete the destruction of all the worlds. Thus, Blumiere leads everyone to a chapel where Bowser and Peach are initially married. There, he and Timpani use their new love to summon Pure Heart, destroy the Heart of Chaos, and close The Void.

After that, Mario and his party bounced back on Flipside. Timpani and Blumiere have vanished; Merlon suggested they die when Chaos's Heart was destroyed, but Nastasia expressed his conviction that both were alive. Post-credit photos imply that Timpani and Blumiere have regained their original form and live elsewhere.

Development

Super Paper Mario was created out of a desire to combine the familiar look of the Mario Paper series with a new game style. The main director of Ryota Kawade is riding the train, thinking of ways to adapt the mini-game of the Thousand Years Do where players control large Bowser in short side-scrolling stages; He realized that the other end of the train looked like a stage in the Mario game and imagined the switch between 2D and 3D. When producer Kensuke Tanabe was informed of the idea, he decided to make a sequel to an action-adventure game, but retained some role-playing elements for making games in the Mario Paper franchise. Kawade and Tanabe also feel that these elements, as well as the ability to switch between 2D and 3D, will make the game more accessible to players unfamiliar with action games. The team plays a side-scrolling Mario title for inspiration, imagines how the levels will look in 3D.

Super Paper Mario was announced by Nintendo on May 11, 2006 at E3 for Nintendo GameCube. On May 30, 2006, Nintendo set the release date of October 9, 2006. That summer, the game "quietly moved" to the Wii along with Donkey Kong Barrel Blast .

The initial PAL copy of the game contains a bug if the language is set to English, German, or Spanish. In Chapter 2-2, the game will freeze if Mario speaks to Mimi's character without first taking the key. Nintendo of Europe has offered to replace game discs at no cost with a fixed version. Nintendo of Europe announced the replacement details on their website in November 2007.

Reception

Reviews for Super Paper Mario are generally positive. This game is the 3rd best-selling software release in April 2007 according to NPD Group, sold 352,000 copies. Super Mario Paper ' has been praised by most critics. GameSpot says its story history has "a great sense of humor," while GameSpy calls it "funny". However, X-Play criticized the plot as "cons" of the game, stating that it was "cutesy". The graph is also well received. GameSpy praised the "clean visuals" and IGN , gave a score chart of 7.5 out of 10, saying "A beautiful 2D platformer and one uninspired 3D.Mario explores fantastic looking worlds when they are flat, but by the time they get their depth into a barren landscape ". X-Play says that "everyone should rejoice that the genre of the aging 2D platform has gained the much-needed makeover of the mustached man who helped create it in the first place." In 2010, IGN named the game as the 9th best game on the Wii, on their "The Top 25 Wii Games".

There are also some complaints about the game. Game Game criticizes the end of the game and the search for a side (like a recipe), as it says "There is not much encouragement to collect enemy cards, baking things, or doing something extra because this game is never hard enough to guarantee And after defeating the game (it takes more than 20 hours), there is no significant additional content to get players back. "GameSpot criticized the audio, saying" The weakest element is the audio game, which is a bit too retro. The sound effects are effective, though a bit too familiar. The sound is also used sparingly, although what is in accordance with the archetype determined by previous games. "Although IGN praised the plot, they said," The writing is well made and funny, but there is so much to read that it really disrupts the flow of the game. "
