Environmental Protection Size
TNPL is accredited with ISO14001: 2004 certification for an effective environmental management system. By using bagasse as the main raw material, TNPL retains more than 40000 hectares of forest land from depletion annually.
TNPL Water Irrigation Enforcement Society (TEWLIS)
Under the WatPL Water Lift Irrigation Plan, farmers will be provided with water treated for irrigation purposes. TNPL uses sophisticated mud treatment systems for wastewater treatment. The treated wastewater is used to irrigate about 1,250-acre (5.1Ã, km 2 ) of dry land with about 250 farmers who are members of the TNPL's Waste Water Irrigation Lifting Agency. Waste TNPL must comply with the norms established by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.
TNPL Plantation Program
In accordance with the National Forest Policy, 1988, Forest-based industries must improve the raw materials needed to meet their own needs. In accordance with the law, TNPL has started plantation development in 2004-05 and launched two plantation schemes, namely Plantation and Plant Breeding.
Agricultural Forestry
Under the forestry scheme, the Company motivates and facilitates small and marginal farmers to take up pulpwood plantations. The prominent features of the Scheme are the provision of quality planting materials at subsidized costs, arranging credit facilities for people in need through banks, providing timely technical advice through qualified professional teams, and repurchasing arrangements with a minimum support price or interest rate the prevailing market. at the time of logging, whichever is higher, and the harvesting and transporting of pulpwood from the farmer's land to the Factory at the company's expense.
Captive Prisoner
In a prisoner plantation scheme, the Captive plantation is raised on the land owned by the Company, the Government Department, and the Education institution and on large individuals holding the land on a profit-sharing basis or on lease basis. The minimum criterion for captive breeding is that the land should be a block of 25 hectares (100,000 m 2 ) & amp; above in one location while less than 25 hectares (100,000 m 2 ) are also considered only in the case of adjacent land of existing prisoner plantations, provided adjoining areas must be adjacent to existing plantations. TNPL signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the landowner to develop the Breeding Farm and to carry out the responsibilities of land development, plantation establishment, plantation maintenance and pulpwood harvesting at the cost of TNPL. Land will be taken either for long-term lease over a period of 6 to 30 years of lease or on the basis of gross proceeds. In a profit-sharing pattern, if the plantation is raised in barren land, the yield is shared between the park and the landowner on a 70:30 basis and in the case of the wetlands, the profit-sharing pattern is 60:40. In the case of rental mode, lease for barren land is Rs.1000/- per acre, whereas for irrigated land it is Rs.3000/- per acre each year paid to the land owner and all products taken by the park.
In the last five years of operations (2004-05 to 2008-09), TNPL has increased plantations at 37,556 hectares (151.98 km 2 ) involving 8235 farmers in twenty-eight districts in Tamil Nadu below Agriculture Forestry Scheme and 2,735 hectares (11.07 km 2 ) under the Prisoner Plantation Scheme. Overall, TNPL has been developing pulpwood plantations around 40291 hectares (as of March 31, 2009).
Clonal Propagation and Research Center (CPRC)
To meet the growing demand for up to 15 million plants to cover 15,000 acres (61Ã, km 2 ) each year, TNPL makes advanced clonal propagation and research centers (CPRC) to achieve self-sufficiency in planting materials and production of clonal plants/quality seedlings with a capacity of 15 million plants per year. The clonal production center starts with a small clog fencing park of 4000 sq.m, a fog room of 8000 sq.m, 5300 sq.m of hardening room and 20,000 sq.m open nursery with latest technological innovations as per international standards. The clonal production center was established at the expense of about 500 lakh. It is considered a milestone in plantation activities and ensures the availability of quality planting materials throughout the year. The above plantation scheme is being implemented throughout Tamil Nadu through 10 regional offices in Karur, Manaparai, Tirunelveli, Karaikudi, Pudukottai, Namakkal, Trichy, Tanjore, Jayangondam and Panruti providing technical advice and assistance to tree farmers.
Forest research and development
TNPL partnered with a NAIP-ICAR-sponsored project entitled "A value chain in Agro-forestry industry in Tamil Nadu" for the promotion of tree farms with short rotation clones/genotypes enhanced through contract farming. Forest College & amp; Research Institute (FC & amp; RI), Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Mettupalayam is the Consortium Leader of this project. The project is being implemented to raise 500 hectares (2.0 km 2 ) from a cluster plantation in 10 Taluks covering 5 districts in Tamil Nadu.
Solid waste management
- The fly ash produced on the power boiler is being sold to the cement factory
- Sludge waste is sold to the Board manufacturing unit
- The resulting lime slurries are being recycled in Lime Kiln
TNPL has obtained the prestigious ISO 14001 Certification from RMTUV, Germany for "Successfully built and implemented an environmental management system for the development, manufacture and supply of paper". This certification should recognize the TNPL's commitment to environmental protection and ongoing efforts to minimize overall environmental impact.
- TNPL has commissioned the Bio-methanation plant, which produces about 23,000 m 3 biogas (methane) per day, to be used as fuel in a lime kiln to replace the oil furnace. Biogas e replaces about 10-12 KL of furnace oil per day in lime-kilns. During 2003-04, the bio-methanation plant produced 41.45 lakh m 3 methane gas and replaced the use of furnace oil worth Rs.2,48 crores
- TNPL obtained the <3 Leaves Award under the Green Rating project from Science and Environment Center , New Delhi during October 2004, in recognition of the Environmental Management System.
Energy management policy
TNPL has installed its own power plant facility to make it 100% self-contained through the installation of 61.18 MW of Power Generating equipment (TG Sets) installed at the paper mill site. The resulting surplus power is being exported to the State Network. TNPL also generates green power through an 18 MW wind farm installed in Devarkulam and Perungudi in the district of Tirunelveli. All the power generated in the wind farm is being exported to the State Grid. The capacity of wind farms has been increased to 21.75 MW in March 2004 by installing 3 wind turbine generators of 1250 kW each. It has installed the Bio-methanation plant to produce methane gas from wastewater (bagasse waste water) and use it as fuel instead of furnace oil in kiln limestone saving 10 KL of furnace oil every day. During 2004-05 TNPL produced 34.12 lakh m 3 methane gas from its bio-methanation plant and used the same in kilns replacing the 1886 KL oil furnace that respects Rs. 2.02 Crores. The Indian Confederation of Industries has acknowledged the bio-methanation project implemented by TNPL as an Innovative Project. The project contributes to sustainable development in terms of generating in-house renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gases.
Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project at TNPL
Registered CDM Project
- Methane Extraction and Fuel Conservation Project
- 6.75 MW Small Scale Grid Connected Wind Power Project
Methane extraction and fuel conservation projects
TNPL commissioned a special type of reactor concept for anaerobic processing of "high speed" from a waste water called the Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Upflow (UASB) reactor using anaerobic sludge technology. The most commonly used Bagasse Wash Water (BWW) wastewater treatment system in India consists of ponds or lagoon processing systems, which undergo anaerobic digestion that release large amounts of greenhouse gases (GHG) into the atmosphere. In addition, the project also involves a system for the utilization of extracted biogas that derives CDM benefits for projects from closed reactors as fuel in limestone kilns, which have been using furnace oil (fossil fuels). The installation of a closed reactor by TNPL for anaerobic digestion BWW will have many environmental and sustainable development benefits.
- The replacement of the current wastewater treatment system by an anaerobic digester will reduce CH substantially 4 , potent GHG, so as not to be emitted into the atmosphere.
- A controlled environment in which BWW is treated will reduce the strong odors emitted from the removable and degradable BWW components.
- By restoring the resulting biogas in CH 4 and using it as a renewable in-house fuel for heating equipment, project activities will contribute to the development of renewable sources in accordance with Sustainable India Development Goals.
- The oil furnace that will be replaced by biogas has a sulfur content of 3.49%. This will produce sulfur dioxide gas emissions (SO 2 ) responsible for acid rain.
- The use of domestically available biogas as a source of energy helps preserve foreign exchange, in addition to creating local rural employment opportunities, by reducing the need to import fossil fuels to meet the country's increasing energy needs.
- The oil storage furnace will reduce the associated CO 2 (GHG) emissions.
By registering with the UNFCCC for CDM benefits, TNPL became the first paper mill in the country to have registered the CDM project with the UNFCC in waste management.
6.75 MW Small Scale Grid Connected Wind Power Project
TNPL has benefited CDM by generating green energy through renewable wind energy. The project activities involve the installation, operation and maintenance of seven wind-powered wind farms (WEGs) owned by the project proponent, TNPL. Electricity generated from seven WEGs will be exported to the grid of the Tamil Nadu state power grid (TNEB). Seven WEGs have been installed in two phases. The first stage involves the installation of four NEG Micon 750 WWs kW and the second phase involves the erection of three WEG Energy Suzlon from 1.25 MW. Seventh WEG has been installed in the Thirunelveli district, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.
On March 30, 2001, TNPL started operations for the first phase of the project with the installation of four WEG 750,000 kW. The second phase of the project has started operations in March 2004. The 7 machines are supplying and selling electricity to the Tamil Nadu Electric Network (TNEB) network.
By displacing electricity from a fossil fuel-generating system, it is estimated that the average GHG emission reduction from project activity is expected to be 14431 ton CO 2 per year.
