digital photo frames (also called digital media frames) are picture frames that feature digital photos without the need for a computer or printer. The introduction of digital photo frames precedes tablet computers, which can serve the same purpose in some situations; however, digital photo frames are generally designed specifically for stationary and aesthetic photo display and therefore usually provide better frames and power systems designed for continuous use.
Digital photo frames come in different shapes and sizes with different features. Some can even play videos and display photos. Owners can choose a digital photo frame using a WiFi connection or not, with cloud storage, and/or a USB and SD card hub.

Features
Digital photo frames range in size from small units such as keychains to large wall-mounted frames that cover several legs. The most common sizes range from 7 inches (18 cm) to 20 inches (51 cm). Some digital photo frames can only display JPEG images. Most digital photo frames display photos as a slide show and usually with adjustable time intervals. They can also send photos to a printer, or have a hybrid feature. An example is the Sony S-Frame F800, which has an integrated printer behind it, or the Epson PictureMate Show.
Digital photo frames usually allow viewing of images directly from the camera's memory card, and can provide internal memory storage. Some allow users to upload images to frame memory via a USB connection, or wirelessly via Bluetooth technology. Others include support for wireless connections (802.11) or using mobile technology to transfer and share files. Some frames allow photos to be shared from frame to other frames.
Certain frames provide specific application support such as loading images via the Internet from RSS feeds, photo sharing sites like Flickr, Picasa and from email.
Built-in speakers are commonly used to play video content with sound, and many frames also display remote control. Battery-operated units are also available for portable use.
New-generation frame companies, such as Meural, are emerging that combine a larger format, built-in access to artistic content, and innovative control mechanisms.

Aspect ratio
The aspect ratio of the frame may vary. The general aspect ratio includes: 4: 3, 3: 2 and 16: 9. (Sometimes 16: 9 is actually 15: 9) Depending on the model and features, incorrect images according to the aspect ratio of the frame can be trimmed, stretched, or minimized to fit. This may cause, respectively, images whose content is lost, distorted, or that have a blank space around it. This can be avoided by purchasing a frame with the exact same aspect ratio as your camera, or editing the photo to a target aspect ratio before transferring it to a frame.
Security issues
In February 2008, a number of digital photo frames, such as the Insignia branded digital frames manufactured in China, were found carrying a Trojan horse dubbed Mocmex on their internal data storage.
Instagram allows third-party application users to connect to their Instagram photo content using OAuth to display photo content and authenticate without the application storing login credentials. A digital photo frame application uses this secure login protocol to eliminate security issues associated with storing login credentials.
