Abrasive Paper is a type of paper or abrasive abrasive, which can be used to scrape (remove material from) surfaces or mechanically solve surfaces. Operations include deburring, polishing, paint removal, corrosion removal, sizing, etc. This is done by moving the abrasive coated paper, with some pressure, to the object being processed. Abrasion can be done by hand, electrically powered, or air-powered equipment.
Emery is a natural rock of impure or corundum oxide crystals. The emery is milled and sieved into different mesh sizes. Paste with a certain size range then tied to a paper backing to produce an abrasive paper. The larger the mesh size, the smaller the abrasion particles. The smaller particles erode the material in smaller amounts and are used to produce finer finishes.
With the successive use of mesh grinding paper, the mirror edges can be obtained. Water or oil is often used as a lubricant and to float abrasive debris and abrasion that has worn out from the workplace, preventing the buildup of debris on the sandpaper. The paper loses effectiveness if too much debris builds up, a condition known as "blockage".
Initially, the emery paper is made of crushed sandstone, tied or given a paper size often with animal glue for water resistance. Today, synthetic adhesives are used in place of natural adhesives and silicon carbide is often replaced for sandpaper. Silicon carbide becomes slightly harder, and more durable with less tendency to break than corundum. The use of rare natural sandpaper today is generally replaced with silicon carbide or pure aluminum oxide paper.
