The GRE Literature in English Test is a standard test run by the Educational Testing Service. It is intended to evaluate applicants seeking admission to graduate programs in English Studies. This test presents various topics related to the literature in English, but the focus is on the old received work as part of the canon.
Scores are scaled and then reported as numbers between 200 and 800; however, in the latest test version, the reported maximum and minimum scores were 760 (99 percent) and 320 (1st percentile) respectively. The average score for all test takers from July 2009 to July 2012 was 549 with a standard deviation of 99.

This test contains 230 questions, grouped into four broad categories. Because many students who enroll in a graduate program in English do so during their first half of the fourth year, the scope of most of the questions is largely from the first three years of the standard American English curriculum. This section examines the ability of examinees to recognize dates, authors or work by style and/or content. The literary-historical scope of this test is as follows:

- English Literature until 1660 (including John Milton) (25-30%)
- English Literature from 1660 to 1925 (25-30%)
- American Literature up to 1925 (15-25%)
- Literature in English after 1925 (20-30%)
Cultural and historical context (20-25%)
- Literary history
- Cultural history
- Identify details in a work
Literary criticism (10-15%)
Identify and analyze the characteristics and methods of various critical and theoretical approaches.
