astrologer (also called cootie catcher , chat box , salt bar , whirlafon , or nails ) is an origami form used in children's games. Parts of fortune tellers are labeled with colors or numbers that serve as an option for players to choose from, and inside there are eight flaps, each hiding a message. The person who operates the astrologer manipulates the device based on the choices made by the player, and finally one of the hidden messages is revealed. These messages may be intended to answer the question (hence the name) or it may be an activity that the player must perform.
The same shape can also be used as a clamp or as a salt shed.

Construction
A paper predictor can be constructed by the steps shown in the illustration below:
- The corners of the paper sheets are folded to fit the opposite side and (if paper is not square) the top is cut, making a square sheet with diagonal folds.
- The four corners of the square are folded into the center, forming a known form in the origami terminology as blintz or pillow covers. The resulting small box is flipped, and the four corners are folded in the second time.
- The four corners are folded so that the points meet in the middle, and players insert their fingers into paper bags at every four corners.

To use fortune tellers, the player who says fate holds four corners of the paper with the index finger and thumb in both hands, keeping two pairs of angles together and two other pairs separated so that only half the internal side of the angle is visible.
Manipulation is done by a variety of similar methods, for example: The player asks questions about the person who holds the fortune teller; this question will be answered by the device. The holder then asks for a number or color. Once the number or color is selected, the holders use their fingers to switch between two color groups and numbers within the fortune teller. The holder replaces this position several times: that can be determined by the number of letters in the selected color, the selected number, or the number of both. Once the holder has finished switching the astrologer position, the player selects one of the flaps that is revealed. These flaps often have colors or numbers on them. The holder then lifts the flap and reveals the wealth beneath it. Steps can be repeated to fit the user.
Other uses
As well as being used to predict fate, these shapes can be used as a brace for play-acting catching insects such as ticks, hence the name "catcher cootie".
The name "salt barn" refers to a different usage for the same form, where it stands on a table with four points down; four open pockets can be used to store small pieces of food.
History
This form was introduced to the English-speaking world under the name of the salt shed in the origins book 1928 Fun with Paper Folding by Murray and Rigney (Fleming H. Revell company, 1928), p. 10). The use of fortune telling paper in the UK has been recorded since the 1950s. Although the phrase "cootie catcher" has been used with other meanings in the US for longer, the use of paper cootie catchers in the US began at least in the 1960s.
