Zink (styled like ZINK ), portmanteau "zero ink", is a colorful printing technology for digital devices that do not require ink cartridges and printouts in one pass. The thermal printing and paper technology was developed by Zink Holdings LLC, a US company, with offices in Edison, NJ and Billerica, MA and manufacturing facilities in Whitsett, NC. Zink Holdings makes all papers; make the printer to print labels and other designs on Zink zRoll reels; and licensed its technology to other companies that create compact photo printers, and incorporates compact photo printers/printers that print photos onto most sheets of Zink 2ÃÆ' â € "3" paper (around 5ÃÆ' â € "8Ã,®).The main licenses include HP, Lifeprint, Prynt and Polaroid.
Zink technology began as a project within the Polaroid Corporation in the 1990s, which spewed Zink as a fully independent company in 2005.

Zink Holdings LCC is a technology company headquartered in Billerica, Massachusetts (formerly Bedford, Massachusetts), founded in 2005. It developed the so-called "ZINK Zero Ink technology" and "ZINK Paper". Zink's Research and development labs and headquarters are in Billerica, with a papermaking plant in Whitsett, North Carolina (using staff and facilities previously used by Konica Minolta).
Zink started as one of two new technologies developed within Polaroid Corporation in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the 1990s, with 100 researchers working on it. Polaroid Corporation issued Zink as a fully independent company in 2005, with 50 of its staff moving there. Zink first launched its technology in January 2007, at the IDEM DEMO 07 conference.
Zink makes all papers; make the printer to print labels and other designs on Zink zRoll reels; and licensed its technology to other companies that create compact photo printers, and incorporate a camera/compact photo printer.

The paper has several layers: a support layer with an optional pressure sensitive adhesive, a heat-sensitive layer with cyan, magenta and yellow dyes in colorless form, and a mantle.
Color addressing is achieved by controlling the length and intensity of the hot pulse.
The color-forming layers contain colorless amorphochromic dyes crystals. These dyes form microcrystals of non-colored tautomers, which are converted into colored shapes by melting and retaining colors after resolidification.
The yellow layer is the uppermost, sensitive to short heat pulses with high temperatures. The magenta layer is in the middle, sensitive to longer pulses with moderate temperatures. The cyan layer is below, sensitive to the lower temperature pulse length. The layers are separated by thin interlayers, acting as heat insulation, moderating heat throughput.
