Coffee cup sleeves , also known as coffee sleeves , coffee claws , cozies , hot cup cups , paper zarfs , coffee collar , coffee arm , and cup holder , roughly cylindrical arm which fits tightly over coffee cups without a handle to isolate the drinker's hand from hot coffee. Coffee sleeves are usually made of textured paperboard, but can be found made of other materials. The coffee arm allows coffee shops, fast-food restaurants, and other vendors to avoid double-cupping, the practice of using two (or more) paper cups to nest for one hot beverage. Some paper cup holders carry ads.
The coffee arm was created in 1991 by Jay Sorensen and patented in 1995 (under the trademark name Java Jacket ), and is now commonly used by coffee shops and other vendors selling hot drinks that are distributed in a paper cup once wear.. There are a number of patents covering various coffee arms and its aspects. Others claimed to find coffee sleeves.
There are a number of companies that produce coffee sleeves; the top five companies based on the volume of coffee arms sold in the US are, in no particular order, International Paper, LBP Manufacturing, Java Jacket, and Labansat & amp; Manufacturing Schulz.
The arm was discovered as Sorensen drove her daughter Ryeder to school and spilled a cup of coffee on her lap. The java jacket first appeared at Seattle Coffeefest in 1995 and Sorensen and his wife Colleen were overwhelmed with requests and orders to be filled.
Coffee cup sleeves can be customized with logos or brands printed directly on the sleeve. Many coffee shops have custom printed copies.
Coffee sleeves should not be confused with cup holders fixed.
