Reason

High school graduation and community work

Some jurisdictions of education in the United States require students to undertake hours of community service to graduate from high school. In some high schools in Washington, for example, students must complete 200 hours of community service to obtain a diploma. Some Washington school districts, including Seattle Public Schools, distinguish between community service and "service learning," which requires students to show that their work has contributed to their education. If a student in high school takes an AVID course, public service is often required.
