Rice Paper is a product made from materials from East Asian paper made from different plants. These include:

• Dried thin slices of Tetrapanax papyrifer : Paper-like materials such as sheets were widely used in the late nineteenth century in Guangdong China as a general support medium for gouache paintings sold to Western clients of the times. The term is first defined in English-English dictionary Robert Morrison which refers to the use of Chinese medicinal plants as a material for painting, as well as for making artificial flowers and shoe soles.
• Xuan paper is made from mulberry paper : Traditional paper originating from ancient China and has been used for centuries in China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam for writing, artwork, and architecture.
• Pulp based paper : Can be made from rice straw or other plants, such as hemp and bamboo.
• Dry starch sheets with various thicknesses or textures : This edible piece of paper has some paper properties and can be made from rice starch. They are known as banh trang, used in Vietnamese cuisine.

In Europe, around the 1900s, paper-like substances were originally known as rice paper , because of the mistaken notion that they were made of rice. In fact, it consists of a small tree pith, Tetrapanax papyrifer , rice paper plant (??).

The plant is grown in swampy forests in Taiwan, and is also cultivated as an ornamental plant because of its large and exotic leaves. To produce paper, the branches are boiled and released from bark. The cylindrical core of the pith is rolled on a hard, flat surface against the blade, by cutting it into thin sheets of fine texture like ivory.

Dyed in various colors, this rice paper is widely used for the preparation of artificial flowers, while the white sheets are used for watercolor painting. Because of its texture, this paper is not suitable for writing.

Mulberry paper

This "rice paper", smooth, thin, cracked, and strong, is named as a wrapper for rice, and is made of mulberry bark fibers. It is used for origami, calligraphy, paper screens and clothing. It is stronger than a commercially prepared pulp paper. Less commonly, paper made from rice straw.

Depending on the type of mulberry used, it is named kozo ( Broussonetia papyrifera , mulberry paper), gampi ( Wikstroemia diplomorpha ), or mitsumata ( Edgeworthia chrysantha ). Fiber comes from the bark of mulberry, not wood or deep pith, and traditionally paper is made by hand.

The branches of the paper mulberry bushes are harvested in the fall, so the fibers can be processed and the paper formed during the winter months, because the fibers break easily in the heat. The branches are cut into halves of two to three feet long and steamed in a large kettle, which makes the bark shrink back from the inner wood, allowing it to be pulled like a banana peel. The bark can then be dried and stored, or used immediately. There are three layers of skin at this stage: blacks, outer layers; green skin, middle layer; and white skin, the deepest layer. All three can be made into paper, but the best paper is made of whites only.

If the leather strips have been dried, they are immersed in water overnight before further processing. To clean black and green skin from whites, leather strips are scattered on the board and scraped with a flat knife. Every difficult knot or point in the fibers is cut and removed at this stage.

The processed bark chunks are then cooked for two or three hours in a mixture of water and soda ash. The fiber is quite mature when it is easily pulled apart elongated. The strip is then rinsed several times in clean water to rinse soda ash. Rinsing also makes the fibers brighter and whiter - fine kozo paper is not bleached, but pure white is natural.

Each leather strip is then examined by hand, with a white background or illuminated from behind by a light box. Small pieces of blacks and other debris are removed with tweezers, and any nodes or pieces of fiber that are difficult to miss during erosion are cut from strips. The ultimate goal is to have completely pure white skin.

The chunks that were hoisted, cooked, and cleaned were then placed on the table and beaten by hand. The bat is a wooden bat that looks like a thicker version of the cricket bats. The fibers are beaten for about half an hour, or until all the fibers have been separated and no longer resemble strips of bark.

The prepared fiber can now be made into a sheet of paper. A viscous substance called formation aid is added to the barrel with fiber and water. Aid formation is polyethylene oxide, and helps slow down the flow of water, which gives longer time for paper makers to form sheets. Sheets are formed with several layers of thin fibers, one on top of the other.

Vietnamese rice paper

Edible rice paper is used to make fresh rolls (salad rolls) or fried spring rolls in Vietnamese cuisine, where rice paper is called bÃÆ'¡nh trÃÆ'¡ng or bÃÆ'¡nh? A nem. Food rice paper materials include white rice flour, tapioca flour, salt, and water. Tapioca flour makes rice paper sticky and smooth. Usually sold dry in a thin round, crisp, translucent sheets wrapped in plastic. The sheets are immersed briefly in hot water to soften them, then wrapped around tasty or sweet ingredients.

Edible paper is used in home-cooked cakes such as macaroni and often sold separately as plain colored sheets or printed with drawings, such as banknotes and dollar bills.

In the pilot episode of the Kung Fu television series, Kwai Chang Caine underwent training to become a Shaolin priest. One of the challenges he faced was walking on a piece of rice paper without tearing it or leaving its marks. His success completing the tests was put into the sequence of the opening title of the series, with the narration, "When you can walk long and leave no trace, you will learn."
