coaster , coaster beverage , coaster drink , or beermat is an item used to rest the drink. Coaster protects table surfaces or other surfaces where users can place drinks.
Pubs usually have a beermat scattered all over its surface. They are used not only to protect the surface of the table, but, since they are usually made of paper, they can also be used to absorb dew that drips along the glass or serve as adep hoc notepad. Beermats are often branded with trademarks or alcohol ads. Beermats should not be confused with bar mats, rectangular rubber pieces or absorbent materials used to protect the table and limit the spread of spilled drinks in bars or pubs.

Back in 1880, the first beermats made of cardboard were introduced by the German printing company, Friedrich Horn. In 1892, Robert Sputh of Dresden produced the first beermat made of wood pulp. The Watney beer factory introduced them to England in 1920 to advertise their pale ales. Packaging company Quarmby Promotions, founded in 1872, began producing beermats at Milnsbridge in 1931. After Quarmby Promotions was taken over by Katz Group, the company transferred production to Brighouse and in 2006 to Morley, West Yorkshire, before closing production in 2009.
Saucer is also long used in western culture for many of the same purposes. When drinking tea, it is a habit to use cups and saucer sets. In the mid-twentieth century, glass coasters were made in many materials and styles are being produced for domestic use. Today, they are commonly used as household appliances everyday and also used in restaurants.

Producing
Coasters are often made from high grammar cardboard papers, but may also be made from several layers of tissue paper. The essential parameters for beer are water absorption, wet scrubbing and printability.
Recently, glass coasters with empty frames have been produced. Consumers can then personalize each with different images or designs. Recently some beermat producers have overhauled their manufacturing process, allowing them to supply pre-ordered cardboard beers in quantities as low as 100 without significant price premiums associated with smaller print orders. It has expanded the reach of people with pre-orders, printed beermats for weddings and their political parties, utilizing them to deliver campaign messages.
Coaster Factory and Canada Coaster, based in North America, and The Katz Group, based in Weisenbach, Germany, generate about 75% of the estimated 5.5 billion beermats in the world, including about two thirds of the European market and 97% of the Market US. In addition to the factory in Weisenbach, Katz has two more conversion plants in the US: one in Sanborn, New York, and the other in Johnson City, Tennessee.
Drink coasters are also made of soapstone, metal, wood and silicon.

Beermats are usually decorated with customized drawings - usually mention or advertise beer brands, although they can also be used to promote beverage companies, sports franchises, businesses or special events.
Tegestology
Some coasters are collectibles. Tegestology is a term coined from Latin ( teges , - ethical , "covering, mat") defined as the practice of collecting beermats or coasters, with practitioners known as legal experts . A short story of the British Pathe of 1960 showed the comedy of the duo of Morecambe and Wise as a tough expert.
