Papel picado ("hollow paper", "pecked paper") is a decorative handicraft made from cut paper into a beautiful and elaborate design. This is considered Mexican folk art. Designs are generally cut out of colored tissue paper using guides or templates and small chisels, creating as many as forty banners at a time. Papel picado can also be made by folding tissue paper and using sharp little scissors. Common themes include birds, floral designs, and skeletons. They are commonly displayed for both secular and religious occasions, such as Easter, Christmas, Day of the Dead, as well as during marriage, quinceaÃÆ' Â eresia, baptism, and baptism. In Mexico, papic picado is mainly inserted into the altar during the Day of the Dead.

Origins

Papel picado is similar to a piece of Chinese paper (originally from China during the sixth century), called 'jianzhi' (or "cut paper"). The two crafts are not exactly the same, because the Chinese version is cut using scissors or knives, while the Mexican form is carved. In Mexico, in the mid-nineteenth century, people were forced to buy products from hacienda shops, where they found tissue paper.

During the Aztecs, Aztec used mulberry and fig tree bark to make a rough paper called "Amatl". When tissue paper is available, the craftsmen usually coat 40 to 50 layers of tissue and incise the design into it using "fierritos", a kind of chisel.

San Salvador Huixcolotla

San Salvador Huixcolotla is a municipality in the Mexican state of Puebla and is considered a central papic picado. Known for having a large community of artisans that produce high quality papaya picado.

At Huixcolotla, papel picado is mainly produced for celebrations around the Day of the Dead. Over time, the tools used to make papic picado have changed from scissor to chisel because of the greater accuracy and detail they allow. Traditionally, the art of making papic picado has been passed down from generation to generation. Around 1930, art spread from Huixcolota to other parts of Mexico such as Puebla and Tlaxcala. One time in the 1960s, papic picado spread to Mexico City and from there to the United States and Europe.

Production

Traditionally, papel picado is made entirely by hand.

The first step is to draw the design on paper and then close the paper with transparent plastic. This will protect the original image. To produce multiple copies at once, fifty to a hundred pieces of Chinese paper are stacked and then clasped together. By using multiple chisels with different shape tips, artists cut pieces of paper from the pile. This allows the engraving of multiple design copies at once.

The pile is then separated, with each sheet of paper being picado paper. Each sheet is identical to the other in the pile. The picados (or "banderitas") paper usually depends on the string or attached to the pen.
