Scroll Slitting is a sliding operation that cuts a large roll of material into a narrower roll. There are two types of slitting: log slitting and rewind slitting . In the slitting log rolls the material is treated as a whole ('log') and one or more slices are taken from it without the process of unrolling/re-re-opening. Upon retreating, web slitting will be canceled and run through the engine, through a knife or laser, before being played back on one or more axes to form a narrower roll. Some of the narrower strips of material can be known as mult, or pancake, if the diameter is much larger than the width. For rewind slitting, the machine used is called rewinder slitter, slitter or slitting machine - this name is used interchangeably for the same machine. For very narrow and thin products, the pancakes become unstable, and then retreat as possible to the spindle rolls: the rewind coil is much wider than the width of the gap and the web oscillates in the reel as it flips back and forth. Apart from the benefits of stability it is also then possible to place a very long length, (often tens of kilometers), onto a single coil.

Process

Soft materials

Several methods are available for soft materials such as plastic film, textile, adhesive tape, and paper. Razor blades, straight, or circular blades are in use. Some blades cut material while others destroy material against hard coils. It's similar to a knife. The cutting knife can be set to the desired width. Some machines have multiple blades and can generate multiple output rolls at a time. The slit material is rolled back on the paper, plastic or metal core at the side of the engine exit.

This process is used because of its low cost and high precision for mass production. Some machines have programs that monitor the blades and sharpen blades frequently to maintain the quality and accuracy of cutting. Depending on the industry and the product being slit the machine can run between 10 m/min (special metal mesh) and 5000 m/min (paper making process). The machines can also combine extensive automation to correctly control the tension of the material, automatically positioning the cutting blades, automatically aligning the cores in which the material is wrapped and to reduce manual handling of the rolls.

Examples of materials that can be cut in this way are: adhesive tapes, foams, rubber, paper products, paper, plastics (such as tarpaulins and cover wrap), glass fabrics, fabrics, liner and film release.

Hardware

For harder materials, such as sheet metal, slats can not be used. Instead, modified shaving forms are used. Two cylindrical rolls with ribs and the same groove are used to cut large rolls into several narrow scrolls. This sustainable production process is economical but precise; usually more precise than most other cutting processes. However, the occurrence of rough edges known as burrs is common at the edge of the gap. Also, the geometry of the roll is determined by a special tolerance in addition to the material type and the thickness of the workpiece.

Machine

For metal coils, slitter consists of three main parts: uncoiler, slitter, and recoiler. The material is fed from uncoiler, through a nip between two circular cutter wheels (one above and the other one below), and then returns the cuts in the slit pieces on the recoiler.

When the term "slitter rewinder" or "slitting machine" is used to describe the machine, the three parts are referred to as easing, the slitting and backward sections. Slitter rewinders are commonly used for slitting plastic films, paper and sheet metal. The comfortable stage holds the roll stable and allows it to spin; it either braked or encouraged to maintain an accurate tension in the material. Some engines have a relaxation that reduces the effect of inertia when it starts to remove heavy rolls or when the material is very sensitive to voltage.

The slitting section has three main options:

  • Razor slitting, ideal for thin plastic films - the system is very simple and fast to set up. Although razors have low cost, they have to be replaced frequently to ensure good quality slit edges.
  • Rotary shear slitting. The male and female circular blades are involved to provide a scissor-cutting effect. This system is widely used on paper, film and foil. Although the blades take longer to position, they stay sharper longer than a razor blade. Setup time can be reduced by using automatic knife positioning system.
  • Destroy the slit. The man's blade ran against the runway. This system works well with certain materials including non-wovens and foams.

The reverse section also has an option. The main type is the center winding using a different reverse axle. This shaft becomes universal on most cutting machines. The differential shaft ensures the voltage is evenly distributed across the full width of the material. The closed-loop voltage control of the winding using feedback from the load cell provides the total stress control system required to run voltage-sensitive materials. Accurate and accurate voltage control is the key to a good slitting roll. Modern machines use AC vector drives with closed-loop feedback from AC motors. When used with the correct control algorithm, they produce excellent results with minimum maintenance.

Industrial use

Roll slitting is a technique widely used by Converters (industry). The converter industry usually refers to companies that print, coat and make laminates. A typical converter is a company that produces flexible packaging materials for packing food. This may involve the purchase of large plastic film rolls such as biaxial oriented polypropylene (BOPP) which is then molded into the customer's design and coated with a cold seal adhesive for use on high-speed packaging machines. This material is printed and coated in large diameter winds and width for maximum efficiency. The scroll is then sliced, using a slicer, into small rolls of size to be used on the packaging machine.
