The term black fax refers to the transmission of a dismissal fax, consisting of one or more pages completely filled with a uniform black tone. The intent of the sender is generally to use as much as possible the ink, toner, or thermal paper of the receiver, thereby burdening the recipient's money and/or rejecting the receiver's use from their own machine (this is similar to a computer-based denial of service attack). This becomes easier because the fax transmission protocol solidifies solid black images very well, so a very short fax call can generate multiple pages.

Black fax has been used to harass large agencies or government departments, to retaliate against junk fax senders, or just as a simple joke.

The basic principle of black fax can be extended to form a black fax attack. In this case, one or more sheets are fed half way through the sending fax machine and are taped to the end to the end, forming an endless loop. which rotates through the machine. Not only solid black can be used, but also images that will be repeated endlessly in the receiver's machine until the toner runs out.

The introduction of computer-based facsimile systems (combined with integrated document imaging solutions) in large companies now means that black faxing is unlikely to cause them any trouble. On the other hand, the ability of a computer modem to send a fax offers a new way to abuse. A program can be used to generate hundreds of pages that are very dense, black-clear or large volumes of very high, original, and non-repetitive junk, just as effective but much more difficult to remove - and send it very quickly to the target fax machine.

Black fax and fax round are similar (both in intent and apply) to the lace card.
