Goodreads are "social cataloging" websites that allow individuals to freely browse their book, annotation and review databases. Users can register and register books to generate library catalogs and reading lists. They can also create their own group of book suggestions, surveys, polls, blogs, and discussions. The website office is located in San Francisco. The company is currently owned by Amazon online retailers.

Goodreads was founded in December 2006 and launched in January 2007 by Otis Chandler, a software engineer and entrepreneur, and Elizabeth Khuri. The website grows rapidly in popularity once it's launched. As of December 2007, the site has over 650,000 members and over 10,000,000 books have been added. As of July 2012, the site reported 10 million members, 20 million monthly visits, and 30 employees. On July 23, 2013, it was announced on their website that the user base has grown to 20 million members, has doubled to nearly 11 months. On March 28, 2013, Amazon announced the acquisition of Goodreads.

Histori

The Chandlers created Goodreads in 2006. Goodreads stated mission is "to help people find and share books they love... [and] to improve the reading and learning process around the world." Goodreads also addresses "what publishers call a" found "problem by guiding consumers in the digital age to find books they may want to read.

During its first year of business, the company was run without formal funding. In December 2007, the site received an estimated $ 750,000 fund from an angel investor. This funding lasted Goodreads until 2009, when Goodreads received two million dollars from True Ventures. In October 2010 the company opened its application programming interface, which allowed developers to access the ratings and titles. Goodreads also receive a small commission when a user clicks from his site to an online bookseller and makes a purchase.

In 2011, Goodreads acquired Discovereads, a book recommendation engine that uses "machine-learning algorithms to analyze books that people might like, based on books they liked in the past and books favored by people with similar tastes." Once a user ranks 20 books with a five-star scale, the site will begin to make recommendations. Otis Chandler believes this ranking system will be superior to Amazon, as Amazon includes books that users have viewed or purchased as rewards when determining their recommendations. Later that year, Goodreads introduced an algorithm to suggest books to registered users and had over five million members. The New Yorker Macy Halford notes that the algorithm is not perfect, because the number of books required to create a perfect recommendation system is so great that "when I get half the trip there, my reading preferences will change and I must start all over again. "

In October 2012, Goodreads announced it had evolved into 11 million members with 395 million catalog books and over 20,000 book clubs created by its users. A month later, in November 2012, Goodreads has surpassed 12 million members, with a member base multiplying in one year.

In March 2013, Amazon made a deal to acquire Goodreads in the second quarter of 2013 for an undisclosed amount. In September 2013, Goodreads announces it will remove, without warning, a review mentioning an author's conduct or threat to an author.

In January 2016, Amazon announced that Shelfari will close Shelfari (a competitor previously acquired by Amazon) that supports Goodreads effective March 16, 2016. Users are offered the ability to export data and migrate accounts.

In April 2016, Goodreads announced that over 50 million user reviews had been posted.

Features

Book search

On the Goodreads website, users can add books to their personal bookshelves, rate and review books, see what their friends and authors are reading, participate in discussion boards and groups on various topics, and get advice for future reading options based on reviews of previously read books. Once users add friends to their profile, they'll see their friends 'shelves and reviews and can comment on friends' pages. Goodreads have a rating system of one to five stars, with the option to accompany ratings with a written review. This site provides a standard bookshelf - read, read, read - and the opportunity to create customized shelves to categorize user books.

Access content

Goodreads users can read or listen to book previews on websites using Kindle Cloud Reader and Audible. Goodreads also offers quizzes and trivia, quotations, book lists, and free gifts. Members can receive regular bulletins containing new books, suggestions, author interviews, and poetry. If a user has written a work, the work can be linked to the author's profile page, which also includes the author's blog. Goodreads organize offline opportunities as well, such as IRL book exchanges and "literary pub crawls".

User interaction

The website facilitates reader interaction with the author through interviews, gifts, author blogs, and profile information. There is also a special section for authors with suggestions to promote their work at Goodreads.com, which aims to help them reach their target audience. In 2011, "seventeen thousand authors, including James Patterson and Margaret Atwood" used Goodreads to advertise.

In addition, Goodreads has a presence on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and other social networking sites. Linking Goodreads accounts with social networking accounts like Facebook allows the ability to import contacts from social network accounts into Goodreads, expanding the list of Goodreads "Friends" of a person. There are settings available, too, to allow Goodreads to send directly to a social networking account, which informs, for example, a Facebook friend, what is being read or how a person judges a book. This constant association of Goodreads to other social networking sites keeps information flowing and connectivity constant.

Catalog data

Book catalog data is featured with large imports from various closed and open data sources, including individual publishers, Ingram, Amazon (before 2012 and after 2013), Worldcat and Library of Congress.

Goodreads librarians improve book information on websites, including editing books and author information and adding cover images. Goodreads members can apply to become a volunteer librarian after they have 50 books on their profile. Goodreads librarians coordinate at Goodreads Librarian Group.

User data belongs to Goodreads even though it is available through the application programming interface, or API, unlike similar projects such as The Open Library that publishes catalogs and edits users as open data.

Amazon controversy requirements

In January 2012, Goodreads switched from using the Amazon Public Product Ads API to book metadata (such as title, author, and page count) to order Ingram wholesalers. Goodreads finds Amazon's requirements to use its APIs too tight, and the combination of Ingram, Library of Congress, and other sources will be more flexible. Some users fear their reading records will be lost, but Goodreads has a number of plans to ease the transition and ensure that no data is lost, even for titles that may be in danger of deletion as they are only available through Amazon, such as the Kindle edition and self-published works at Amazon. In May 2013, as a result of Goodreads acquisition by Amazon, Goodreads began using Amazon data again.

Competition and review of reasonableness

In 2012, a reviewer wrote a bad review about a novel. The author and publisher discussed publicly on Twitter how to "drop" the front page of the novel's Goodreads page. This sparked a furor about the relationship between the author and the reviewer about Goodreads. Also in 2012, Goodreads receives criticism from users about the availability and tone of reviews posted on the site; some users and websites state that certain reviewers are harassing and encouraging attacks on authors. Goodreads publishes its review guide in August 2012 to address this issue publicly. Then, Amazon's new owner repeats the policy and adds it to include a review removal containing "ad hominem attacks or off-topic comments." Several news sources reported the announcement, citing the reasons Amazon's business to move:

When writers threatened mass account cancellations to protest bullying, many readers who commented on the announcement are now threatening the same thing. And while many of these may seem like nothing more than a child's play behavior among kids who do not really have good guys or bad guys, remember that some e-book retailers include Goodreads APIs into their sales pages, posts effective book reviews that many in the Goodreads community know are wrong, and nothing more than an act of revenge against the author; real-world sales decisions have been made by consumers based on this review.

Regarding the acquisition of Amazon Goodreads 2013, the New York Times said, "Goodreads are Amazon's rivals as a place to find books" and that this deal "consolidates the power of Amazon to determine which authors are getting exposure for their work". Some authors, however, believe that purchasing means that "the best place to discuss a book is to join the best place to buy a book".
