Flexographic ink is the ink transferred by the flexography process, mainly used in printing packing materials (cardboard, corrugated cartons, paper bags and plastic bags, food packaging, newspapers, catalogs, etc.). Inks and printing methods continue to grow in popularity due to their low cost and environmentally friendly properties. The most important part of the printing process is the application of ink.

There are three main types of ink: water-based, solvent and UV that can be cured. The printing surface (substrate type) determines the recommended ink type for use. Each type of ink has advantages and disadvantages, therefore the type of ink used in printing is determined by factors such as price, speed, and use of packaging (food, cleaning, or shopping bags).

History

In the early stages of flexography, aniline dye inks are used. Because of its toxicity, its use in food packaging is prohibited and causes complications due to frequent staining and the need for bleeding. Over time, changes and improvements are made, involving the substitution of aniline dyes for polyamide resins which speeds up the drying process and thus the whole printing process itself.

Solvent based inks are being used, which are safe for food packaging, but are harmful to the environment. Environmental Law of the 1980s, causing the printer to try water-based ink. Currently, most printers are easily adapted to water-based ink, allowing the printer to recycle ink for later use.

George Sickinger, CEO of International Color Resolution, said that "over time, water-based inks have a much higher herbal resin content and will become the new standard for water base formulation." Sickinger also stated that UV-curable inks require less energy and produce less waste, while the quality is higher.

The Environmental Protection Agency has worked with the flexographic industry in project design to help flexographic businesses, promote water-based inks for low power consumption, and UV curable ink systems, as they use less ink.

Currently in the EU, there are 2 institutions that provide companies with certifications of "COMPOSTABLE" and "COMPOSTABLE", VINÃÆ' â € Å"OTTE and DIN CERTCO, which will be used by ink in bioplastic prints that meet the requimible biodegrading and composting capabilities. One of the first ink manufacturers, in early 2000, to get this certification and commercialize this type of ink is Chimigraf
